ItseemedsuchanextraordinarythingtohaveDoraalwaysthere.Itwassounaccountablenottobeobligedtogoouttoseeher,nottohaveanyoccasiontobetormentingmyselfabouther,nottohavetowritetoher,nottobescheminganddevisingopportunitiesofbeingalonewithher.Sometimesofanevening,whenIlookedupfrommywriting,andsawherseatedopposite,Iwouldleanbackinmychair,andthinkhowqueeritwasthattherewewere,alonetogetherasamatterofcourse—nobody’sbusinessanymore—alltheromanceofourengagementputawayuponashelf,torust—noonetopleasebutoneanother—oneanothertoplease,forlife.
Whentherewasadebate,andIwaskeptoutverylate,itseemedsostrangetome,asIwaswalkinghome,tothinkthatDorawasathome!Itwassuchawonderfulthing,atfirst,tohavehercomingsoftlydowntotalktomeasIatemysupper.Itwassuchastupendousthingtoknowforcertainthatsheputherhairinpapers.Itwasaltogethersuchanastonishingeventtoseeherdoit!
