Whenthechambermaidtappedatmydoorateighto’clock,andinformedmethatmyshaving-waterwasoutside,Ifeltseverelythehavingnooccasionforit,andblushedinmybed.Thesuspicionthatshelaughedtoo,whenshesaidit,preyeduponmymindallthetimeIwasdressing;andgaveme,Iwasconscious,asneakingandguiltyairwhenIpassedheronthestaircase,asIwasgoingdowntobreakfast.Iwassosensitivelyaware,indeed,ofbeingyoungerthanIcouldhavewished,thatforsometimeIcouldnotmakeupmymindtopassheratall,undertheignoblecircumstancesofthecase;but,hearinghertherewithabroom,stoodpeepingoutofwindowatKingCharlesonhorseback,surroundedbyamazeofhackney-coaches,andlookinganythingbutregalinadrizzlingrainandadark-brownfog,untilIwasadmonishedbythewaiterthatthegentlemanwaswaitingforme.
Itwasnotinthecoffee-roomthatIfoundSteerforthexpectingme,butinasnugprivateapartment,red-curtainedandTurkey-carpeted,wherethefireburntbright,andafinehotbreakfastwassetforthonatablecoveredwithacleancloth;andacheerfulminiatureoftheroom,thefire,thebreakfast,Steerforth,andall,wasshininginthelittleroundmirroroverthesideboard.Iwasratherbashfulatfirst,Steerforthbeingsoself-possessed,andelegant,andsuperiortomeinallrespects(ageincluded);buthiseasypatronagesoonputthattorights,andmademequiteathome.
