IPASSoverallthathappenedatschool,untiltheanniversaryofmybirthdaycameroundinMarch.ExceptthatSteerforthwasmoretobeadmiredthanever,Iremembernothing.Hewasgoingawayattheendofthehalf-year,ifnotsooner,andwasmorespiritedandindependentthanbeforeinmyeyes,andthereforemoreengagingthanbefore;butbeyondthisIremembernothing.Thegreatremembrancebywhichthattimeismarkedinmymind,seemstohaveswallowedupalllesserrecollections,andtoexistalone.
ItisevendifficultformetobelievethattherewasagapoffulltwomonthsbetweenmyreturntoSalemHouseandthearrivalofthatbirthday.Icanonlyunderstandthatthefactwasso,becauseIknowitmusthavebeenso;otherwiseIshouldfeelconvincedthattherewasnointerval,andthattheoneoccasiontrodupontheother’sheels.
HowwellIrecollectthekindofdayitwas!Ismellthefogthathungabouttheplace;Iseethehoarfrost,ghostly,throughit;Ifeelmyrimyhairfallclammyonmycheek;Ilookalongthedimperspectiveoftheschoolroom,withasputteringcandlehereandtheretolightupthefoggymorning,andthebreathoftheboyswreathingandsmokingintherawcoldastheyblowupontheirfingers,andtaptheirfeetuponthefloor.Itwasafterbreakfast,andwehadbeensummonedinfromtheplayground,whenMr.Sharpenteredandsaid:
‘DavidCopperfieldistogointotheparlour.’
IexpectedahamperfromPeggotty,andbrightenedattheorder.
