IbelieveIcanrememberthesetwoatalittledistanceapart,dwarfedtomysightbystoopingdownorkneelingonthefloor,andIgoingunsteadilyfromtheonetotheother.IhaveanimpressiononmymindwhichIcannotdistinguishfromactualremembrance,ofthetouchofPeggotty’sforefingerassheusedtoholditouttome,andofitsbeingroughenedbyneedlework,likeapocketnutmeg-grater.
Thismaybefancy,thoughIthinkthememoryofmostofuscangofartherbackintosuchtimesthanmanyofussuppose;justasIbelievethepowerofobservationinnumbersofveryyoungchildrentobequitewonderfulforitsclosenessandaccuracy.Indeed,Ithinkthatmostgrownmenwhoareremarkableinthisrespect,maywithgreaterproprietybesaidnottohavelostthefaculty,thantohaveacquiredit;therather,asIgenerallyobservesuchmentoretainacertainfreshness,andgentleness,andcapacityofbeingpleased,whicharealsoaninheritancetheyhavepreservedfromtheirchildhood.
