Hispaperswereinalittleconfusion,inconsequenceofMr.JackMaldonhavinglatelyprofferedhisoccasionalservicesasanamanuensis,andnotbeingaccustomedtothatoccupation;butweshouldsoonputrightwhatwasamiss,andgoonswimmingly.Afterwards,whenwewerefairlyatourwork,IfoundMr.JackMaldon’seffortsmoretroublesometomethanIhadexpected,ashehadnotconfinedhimselftomakingnumerousmistakes,buthadsketchedsomanysoldiers,andladies’heads,overtheDoctor’smanuscript,thatIoftenbecameinvolvedinlabyrinthsofobscurity.
TheDoctorwasquitehappyintheprospectofourgoingtoworktogetheronthatwonderfulperformance,andwesettledtobeginnextmorningatseveno’clock.Weweretoworktwohourseverymorning,andtwoorthreehourseverynight,exceptonSaturdays,whenIwastorest.OnSundays,ofcourse,Iwastorestalso,andIconsideredtheseveryeasyterms.
Ourplansbeingthusarrangedtoourmutualsatisfaction,theDoctortookmeintothehousetopresentmetoMrs.Strong,whomwefoundintheDoctor’snewstudy,dustinghisbooks,—afreedomwhichheneverpermittedanybodyelsetotakewiththosesacredfavourites.
Theyhadpostponedtheirbreakfastonmyaccount,andwesatdowntotabletogether.Wehadnotbeenseatedlong,whenIsawanapproachingarrivalinMrs.Strong’sface,beforeIheardanysoundofit.
