           Ifthehouse,andeveryoneofus,hadtumbledoutintotherivertogether,Icouldhardlyhavereceivedagreatershock.

           ‘Dickknowsit,’saidmyaunt,layingherhandcalmlyonmyshoulder.‘Iamruined,mydearTrot!AllIhaveintheworldisinthisroom,exceptthecottage;andthatIhaveleftJanettolet.Barkis,Iwanttogetabedforthisgentlemantonight.Tosaveexpense,perhapsyoucanmakeupsomethinghereformyself.Anythingwilldo.It’sonlyfortonight.We’lltalkaboutthis,more,tomorrow.’

           Iwasrousedfrommyamazement,andconcernforherIamsure,forherbyherfallingonmyneck,foramoment,andcryingthatsheonlygrievedforme.Inanothermomentshesuppressedthisemotion;andsaidwithanaspectmoretriumphantthandejected:

           ‘Wemustmeetreversesboldly,andnotsufferthemtofrightenus,mydear.Wemustlearntoacttheplayout.Wemustlivemisfortunedown,Trot!’
