           ItwasMissMurdstonewhowasarrived,andagloomy-lookingladyshewas;dark,likeherbrother,whomshegreatlyresembledinfaceandvoice;andwithveryheavyeyebrows,nearlymeetingoverherlargenose,asif,beingdisabledbythewrongsofhersexfromwearingwhiskers,shehadcarriedthemtothataccount.Shebroughtwithhertwouncompromisinghardblackboxes,withherinitialsonthelidsinhardbrassnails.Whenshepaidthecoachmanshetookhermoneyoutofahardsteelpurse,andshekeptthepurseinaveryjailofabagwhichhunguponherarmbyaheavychain,andshutuplikeabite.Ihadnever,atthattime,seensuchametallicladyaltogetherasMissMurdstonewas.

           Shewasbroughtintotheparlourwithmanytokensofwelcome,andthereformallyrecognizedmymotherasanewandnearrelation.Thenshelookedatme,andsaid:

           ‘Isthatyourboy,sister-in-law?’

           Mymotheracknowledgedme.

           ‘Generallyspeaking,’saidMissMurdstone,‘Idon’tlikeboys.
