WhenIwenttodinnernextday,andonthestreetdoorbeingopened,plungedintoavapour-bathofhaunchofmutton,IdivinedthatIwasnottheonlyguest,forIimmediatelyidentifiedtheticket-porterindisguise,assistingthefamilyservant,andwaitingatthefootofthestairstocarryupmyname.Helooked,tothebestofhisability,whenheaskedmeforitconfidentially,asifhehadneverseenmebefore;butwelldidIknowhim,andwelldidheknowme.Consciencemadecowardsofusboth.
IfoundMr.Waterbrooktobeamiddle-agedgentleman,withashortthroat,andagooddealofshirt-collar,whoonlywantedablacknosetobetheportraitofapug-dog.
