Thelight,bold,flutteringlittlefigureturnedandcamebacksafetome,andIsoonlaughedatmyfears,andatthecryIhaduttered;fruitlesslyinanycase,fortherewasnoonenear.Buttherehavebeentimessince,inmymanhood,manytimestherehavebeen,whenIhavethought,Isitpossible,amongthepossibilitiesofhiddenthings,thatinthesuddenrashnessofthechildandherwildlooksofaroff,therewasanymercifulattractionofherintodanger,anytemptinghertowardshimpermittedonthepartofherdeadfather,thatherlifemighthaveachanceofendingthatday?TherehasbeenatimesincewhenIhavewonderedwhether,ifthelifebeforehercouldhavebeenrevealedtomeataglance,andsorevealedasthatachildcouldfullycomprehendit,andifherpreservationcouldhavedependedonamotionofmyhand,Ioughttohaveheldituptosaveher.Therehasbeenatimesince—Idonotsayitlastedlong,butithasbeen—whenIhaveaskedmyselfthequestion,wouldithavebeenbetterforlittleEm’lytohavehadthewaterscloseaboveherheadthatmorninginmysight;andwhenIhaveansweredYes,itwouldhavebeen.
