           ‘Andtotakecare,’saidMr.Wickfield,‘thatyou’renotimposedon,eh?Asyoucertainlywouldbe,inanycontractyoushouldmakeforyourself.Well!Iamready.Thereareworsetasksthanthat,inmycalling.’

           ‘Ishallhavenothingtothinkofthen,’saidtheDoctor,withasmile,‘butmyDictionary;andthisothercontract-bargainAnnie.’

           AsMr.Wickfieldglancedtowardsher,sittingattheteatablebyAgnes,sheseemedtometoavoidhislookwithsuchunwontedhesitationandtimidity,thathisattentionbecamefixeduponher,asifsomethingweresuggestedtohisthoughts.

           ‘ThereisapostcomeinfromIndia,Iobserve,’hesaid,afterashortsilence.
