           ‘Why,youhavealwaysbeeninearnest!’saidAgnes,laughingagain.

           ‘Oh!thatwasasachild,oraschoolboy,’saidI,laughinginmyturn,notwithoutbeingalittleshame-faced.‘Timesarealteringnow,andIsupposeIshallbeinaterriblestateofearnestnessonedayorother.Mywonderis,thatyouarenotinearnestyourself,bythistime,Agnes.’

           Agneslaughedagain,andshookherhead.

           ‘Oh,Iknowyouarenot!’saidI,‘becauseifyouhadbeenyouwouldhavetoldme.Oratleast’forIsawafaintblushinherface,‘youwouldhaveletmefinditoutformyself.
