MicawberarrangedthathewouldcallatDoctorStrong’sinthecourseofthemorning(havingapresentimentthattheremittancewouldarrivebythatpost),andproposethedayafter,ifitwouldsuitmebetter.AccordinglyIwascalledoutofschoolnextforenoon,andfoundMr.Micawberintheparlour;whohadcalledtosaythatthedinnerwouldtakeplaceasproposed.WhenIaskedhimiftheremittancehadcome,hepressedmyhandanddeparted.
AsIwaslookingoutofwindowthatsameevening,itsurprisedme,andmademeratheruneasy,toseeMr.MicawberandUriahHeepwalkpast,arminarm:Uriahhumblysensibleofthehonourthatwasdonehim,andMr.MicawbertakingablanddelightinextendinghispatronagetoUriah.ButIwasstillmoresurprised,whenIwenttothelittlehotelnextdayattheappointeddinner-hour,whichwasfouro’clock,tofind,fromwhatMr.Micawbersaid,thathehadgonehomewithUriah,andhaddrunkbrandy-and-wateratMrs.Heep’s.
‘AndI’lltellyouwhat,mydearCopperfield,’saidMr.Micawber,‘yourfriendHeepisayoungfellowwhomightbeattorney-general.IfIhadknownthatyoungman,attheperiodwhenmydifficultiescametoacrisis,allIcansayis,thatIbelievemycreditorswouldhavebeenagreatdealbettermanagedthantheywere.’
Ihardlyunderstoodhowthiscouldhavebeen,seeingthatMr.Micawberhadpaidthemnothingatallasitwas;butIdidnotliketoask.
