           ‘Anewboy,younggentlemen,’saidtheDoctor;‘TrotwoodCopperfield.’

           OneAdams,whowasthehead-boy,thensteppedoutofhisplaceandwelcomedme.Helookedlikeayoungclergyman,inhiswhitecravat,buthewasveryaffableandgood-humoured;andheshowedmemyplace,andpresentedmetothemasters,inagentlemanlywaythatwouldhaveputmeatmyease,ifanythingcould.

           Itseemedtomesolong,however,sinceIhadbeenamongsuchboys,oramonganycompanionsofmyownage,exceptMickWalkerandMealyPotatoes,thatIfeltasstrangeaseverIhavedoneinmylife.Iwassoconsciousofhavingpassedthroughscenesofwhichtheycouldhavenoknowledge,andofhavingacquiredexperiencesforeigntomyage,appearance,andconditionasoneofthem,thatIhalfbelieveditwasanimposturetocomethereasanordinarylittleschoolboy.Ihadbecome,intheMurdstoneandGrinbytime,howevershortorlongitmayhavebeen,sounusedtothesportsandgamesofboys,thatIknewIwasawkwardandinexperiencedinthecommonestthingsbelongingtothem.WhateverIhadlearnt,hadsoslippedawayfrommeinthesordidcaresofmylifefromdaytonight,thatnow,whenIwasexaminedaboutwhatIknew,Iknewnothing,andwasputintothelowestformoftheschool.But,troubledasIwas,bymywantofboyishskill,andofbook-learningtoo,Iwasmadeinfinitelymoreuncomfortablebytheconsideration,that,inwhatIdidknow,IwasmuchfartherremovedfrommycompanionsthaninwhatIdidnot.
