           MylateexperienceswithMr.andMrs.Micawbersuggestedtomethatheremightbeameansofkeepingoffthewolfforalittlewhile.Iwentupthenextby-street,tookoffmywaistcoat,rolleditneatlyundermyarm,andcamebacktotheshopdoor.

           ‘Ifyouplease,sir,’Isaid,‘Iamtosellthisforafairprice.’

           Mr.DollobyDollobywasthenameovertheshopdoor,atleasttookthewaistcoat,stoodhispipeonitshead,againstthedoor-post,wentintotheshop,followedbyme,snuffedthetwocandleswithhisfingers,spreadthewaistcoatonthecounter,andlookedatitthere,helditupagainstthelight,andlookedatitthere,andultimatelysaid:

           ‘Whatdoyoucallaprice,now,forthisherelittleweskit?’

           ‘Oh!youknowbest,sir,’Ireturnedmodestly.

           ‘Ican’tbebuyerandsellertoo,’saidMr.Dolloby.‘Putapriceonthisherelittleweskit.’

           ‘Wouldeighteenpencebe?’-Ihinted,aftersomehesitation.

           Mr.Dollobyrolleditupagain,andgaveitmeback.
