           ‘Letussay“goodnight”,myfineboy,’saidthegentleman,whenhehadbenthisheadIsawhim!overmymother’slittleglove.

           ‘Goodnight!’saidI.

           ‘Come!Letusbethebestfriendsintheworld!’saidthegentleman,laughing.‘Shakehands!’

           Myrighthandwasinmymother’sleft,soIgavehimtheother.

           ‘Why,that’stheWronghand,Davy!’laughedthegentleman.

           Mymotherdrewmyrighthandforward,butIwasresolved,formyformerreason,nottogiveithim,andIdidnot.Igavehimtheother,andheshookitheartily,andsaidIwasabravefellow,andwentaway.

           AtthisminuteIseehimturnroundinthegarden,andgiveusalastlookwithhisill-omenedblackeyes,beforethedoorwasshut.

           Peggotty,whohadnotsaidawordormovedafinger,securedthefasteningsinstantly,andweallwentintotheparlour.
