Awaywewent,however,onourholidayexcursion;andthefirstthingwedidwastostopatachurch,whereMr.Barkistiedthehorsetosomerails,andwentinwithPeggotty,leavinglittleEm’lyandmealoneinthechaise.ItookthatoccasiontoputmyarmroundEm’ly’swaist,andproposethatasIwasgoingawaysoverysoonnow,weshoulddeterminetobeveryaffectionatetooneanother,andveryhappy,allday.LittleEm’lyconsenting,andallowingmetokissher,Ibecamedesperate;informingher,Irecollect,thatInevercouldloveanother,andthatIwaspreparedtoshedthebloodofanybodywhoshouldaspiretoheraffections.
