           Ithankedher,withoutmakinganydemonstrationofjoy,lestitshouldinducehertowithdrawherassent.NorcouldIhelpthinkingthisaprudentcourse,sinceshelookedatmeoutofthepickle-jar,withasgreatanaccessofsournessasifherblackeyeshadabsorbeditscontents.However,thepermissionwasgiven,andwasneverretracted;forwhenthemonthwasout,PeggottyandIwerereadytodepart.

           Mr.BarkiscameintothehouseforPeggotty’sboxes.Ihadneverknownhimtopassthegarden-gatebefore,butonthisoccasionhecameintothehouse.Andhegavemealookasheshoulderedthelargestboxandwentout,whichIthoughthadmeaninginit,ifmeaningcouldeverbesaidtofinditswayintoMr.Barkis’svisage.

           Peggottywasnaturallyinlowspiritsatleavingwhathadbeenherhomesomanyyears,andwherethetwostrongattachmentsofherlife—formymotherandmyself—hadbeenformed.
