IsoonforgothiminthecontemplationofSteerforth,who,inaneasyamateurway,andwithoutanybook(heseemedtometoknoweverythingbyheart),tooksomeofhisclassesuntilanewmasterwasfound.Thenewmastercamefromagrammarschool;andbeforeheenteredonhisduties,dinedintheparlouroneday,tobeintroducedtoSteerforth.Steerforthapprovedofhimhighly,andtoldushewasaBrick.Withoutexactlyunderstandingwhatlearneddistinctionwasmeantbythis,Irespectedhimgreatlyforit,andhadnodoubtwhateverofhissuperiorknowledge:thoughhenevertookthepainswithme—notthatIwasanybody—thatMr.Mellhadtaken.
Therewasonlyoneothereventinthishalf-year,outofthedailyschool-life,thatmadeanimpressionuponmewhichstillsurvives.Itsurvivesformanyreasons.
