           Herehestopped,asifforrelieffromtheterrorsofhisowndescription.Afterbeingsilentforafewmoments,hepursuedhisstory.

           ‘Itwasapleasantarternoonwhensheawoke;andsoquiet,thattherewarn’tasoundbuttheripplingofthatblueseawithoutatide,upontheshore.Itwasherbelief,atfirst,thatshewasathomeuponaSundaymorning;butthevineleavesassheseeatthewinder,andthehillsbeyond,warn’thome,andcontradictedofher.Then,comeinherfriendtowatchalongsideofherbed;andthensheknow’dastheoldboatwarn’troundthatnextpintinthebaynomore,butwasfuroff;andknow’dwhereshewas,andwhy;andbrokeouta-cryingonthatgoodyoungwoman’sbosom,wheerIhopeherbabyisa-lyingnow,a-cheeringofherwithitsprettyeyes!’

           HecouldnotspeakofthisgoodfriendofEmily’swithoutaflowoftears.Itwasinvaintotry.
