           ThegentlenessoftheDoctor’smannerandsurprise,thedignitythatmingledwiththesupplicatingattitudeofhiswife,theamiableconcernofMr.Dick,andtheearnestnesswithwhichmyauntsaidtoherself,‘Thatmanmad!’(triumphantlyexpressiveofthemiseryfromwhichshehadsavedhim)Iseeandhear,ratherthanremember,asIwriteaboutit.

           ‘Doctor!’saidMr.Dick.‘Whatisitthat’samiss?Lookhere!’

           ‘Annie!’criedtheDoctor.‘Notatmyfeet,mydear!’

           ‘Yes!’shesaid.‘Ibegandpraythatnoonewillleavetheroom!Oh,myhusbandandfather,breakthislongsilence.Letusbothknowwhatitisthathascomebetweenus!’
