           Wehadnotsatheremanyminutes,whenMrs.Markleham,whousuallycontrivedtobeinafussaboutsomething,camebustlingin,withhernewspaperinherhand,andsaid,outofbreath,‘Mygoodnessgracious,Annie,whydidn’tyoutellmetherewassomeoneintheStudy!’

           ‘Mydearmama,’shequietlyreturned,‘howcouldIknowthatyoudesiredtheinformation?’

           ‘Desiredtheinformation!’saidMrs.Markleham,sinkingonthesofa.‘Ineverhadsuchaturninallmylife!’

           ‘HaveyoubeentotheStudy,then,mama?’askedAnnie.

           ‘BEENtotheStudy,mydear!’shereturnedemphatically.‘IndeedIhave!Icameupontheamiablecreatureifyou’llimaginemyfeelings,MissTrotwoodandDavidintheactofmakinghiswill.’

           Herdaughterlookedroundfromthewindowquickly.
