Iwasaboyishhusbandastoyears.Ihadknownthesofteninginfluenceofnoothersorrowsorexperiencesthanthoserecordedintheseleaves.IfIdidanywrong,asImayhavedonemuch,Ididitinmistakenlove,andinmywantofwisdom.Iwritetheexacttruth.Itwouldavailmenothingtoextenuateitnow.
ThusitwasthatItookuponmyselfthetoilsandcaresofourlife,andhadnopartnerinthem.Welivedmuchasbefore,inreferencetoourscramblinghouseholdarrangements;butIhadgotusedtothose,andDoraIwaspleasedtoseewasseldomvexednow.Shewasbrightandcheerfulintheoldchildishway,lovedmedearly,andwashappywithheroldtrifles.
Whenthedebateswereheavy—Imeanastolength,notquality,forinthelastrespecttheywerenotoftenotherwise—andIwenthomelate,Dorawouldneverrestwhensheheardmyfootsteps,butwouldalwayscomedownstairstomeetme.
