           Theyneverhadbeenopened;andwehadnooyster-knivesandcouldn’thaveusedthemifwehad;sowelookedattheoystersandatethemutton.Atleastweateasmuchofitaswasdone,andmadeupwithcapers.IfIhadpermittedhim,IamsatisfiedthatTraddleswouldhavemadeaperfectsavageofhimself,andeatenaplatefulofrawmeat,toexpressenjoymentoftherepast;butIwouldhearofnosuchimmolationonthealtaroffriendship,andwehadacourseofbaconinstead;therehappening,bygoodfortune,tobecoldbaconinthelarder.

           MypoorlittlewifewasinsuchafflictionwhenshethoughtIshouldbeannoyed,andinsuchastateofjoywhenshefoundIwasnot,thatthediscomfitureIhadsubdued,verysoonvanished,andwepassedahappyevening;DorasittingwithherarmonmychairwhileTraddlesandIdiscussedaglassofwine,andtakingeveryopportunityofwhisperinginmyearthatitwassogoodofmenottobeacruel,crossoldboy.
