TherewasanotherthingIcouldhavewished,namely,thatJiphadneverbeenencouragedtowalkaboutthetableclothduringdinner.Ibegantothinktherewassomethingdisorderlyinhisbeingthereatall,evenifhehadnotbeeninthehabitofputtinghisfootinthesaltorthemeltedbutter.OnthisoccasionheseemedtothinkhewasintroducedexpresslytokeepTraddlesatbay;andhebarkedatmyoldfriend,andmadeshortrunsathisplate,withsuchundauntedpertinacity,thathemaybesaidtohaveengrossedtheconversation.
