           Itwaslikethatthen,theisland,thoughtCam,oncemoredrawingherfingersthroughthewaves.Shehadneverseenitfromoutatseabefore.Itlaylikethatonthesea,didit,withadentinthemiddleandtwosharpcrags,andtheseasweptinthere,andspreadawayformilesandmilesoneithersideoftheisland.Itwasverysmall;shapedsomethinglikealeafstoodonend.Sowetookalittleboat,shethought,beginningtotellherselfastoryofadventureaboutescapingfromasinkingship.Butwiththeseastreamingthroughherfingers,asprayofseaweedvanishingbehindthem,shedidnotwanttotellherselfseriouslyastory;itwasthesenseofadventureandescapethatshewanted,forshewasthinking,astheboatsailedon,howherfather’sangeraboutthepointsofthecompass,James’sobstinacyaboutthecompact,andherownanguish,allhadslipped,allhadpassed,allhadstreamedaway.Whatthencamenext?Whereweretheygoing?Fromherhand,icecold,helddeepinthesea,therespurtedupafountainofjoyatthechange,attheescape,attheadventure(thatsheshouldbealive,thatsheshouldbethere).Andthedropsfallingfromthissuddenandunthinkingfountainofjoyfellhereandthereonthedark,theslumbrousshapesinhermind;shapesofaworldnotrealisedbutturningintheirdarkness,catchinghereandthere,asparkoflight;Greece,Rome,Constantinople.
