SoMartinthought,andhethoughtfurther,tillitdawneduponhimthatthedifferencebetweentheselawyers,officers,businessmen,andbankcashiershehadmetandthemembersoftheworkingclasshehadknownwasonaparwiththedifferenceinthefoodtheyate,clothestheywore,neighborhoodsinwhichtheylived. Certainly,inallofthemwaslackingthesomethingmorewhichhefoundinhimselfandinthebooks. TheMorseshadshownhimthebesttheirsocialpositioncouldproduce,andhewasnotimpressedbyit. Apauperhimself,aslavetothemoney-lender,heknewhimselfthesuperiorofthosehemetattheMorses’; and,whenhisonedecentsuitofclotheswasoutofpawn,hemovedamongthemalordoflife,quiveringwithasenseofoutrageakintowhataprincewouldsufferifcondemnedtolivewithgoat-herds.
"Youhateandfearthesocialists,"heremarkedtoMr.Morse,oneeveningatdinner; "butwhy? Youknowneitherthemnortheirdoctrines."
TheconversationhadbeenswunginthatdirectionbyMrs.Morse,whohadbeeninvidiouslysingingthepraisesofMr.Hapgood. ThecashierwasMartin’sblackbeast,andhistemperwasatrifleshortwherethetalkerofplatitudeswasconcerned.
"Yes,"hehadsaid,"CharleyHapgoodiswhattheycallarisingyoungman—somebodytoldmeasmuch. Anditistrue. He’llmaketheGovernor’sChairbeforehedies,and,whoknows? maybetheUnitedStatesSenate."
