Hischiefreasonforsubmittingittothatpublicationwasthat,havingonlytotravelacrossthebayfromOakland,aquickdecisioncouldbereached. Twoweekslaterhewasoverjoyedtosee,inthelatestnumberonthenews-stand,hisstoryprintedinfull,illustrated,andintheplaceofhonor. Hewenthomewithleapingpulse,wonderinghowmuchtheywouldpayhimforoneofthebestthingshehaddone. Also,theceleritywithwhichithadbeenacceptedandpublishedwasapleasantthoughttohim. Thattheeditorhadnotinformedhimoftheacceptancemadethesurprisemorecomplete. Afterwaitingaweek,twoweeks,andhalfaweeklonger,desperationconquereddiffidence,andhewrotetotheeditorofTheBillow,suggestingthatpossiblythroughsomenegligenceofthebusinessmanagerhislittleaccounthadbeenoverlooked.
Evenifitisn’tmorethanfivedollars,Martinthoughttohimself,itwillbuyenoughbeansandpea-souptoenablemetowritehalfadozenlikeit,andpossiblyasgood.
