           "Don’tgetexcitedwhenyoutalk,"RuthadmonishedMartin,beforetheordealofintroductionbegan.

           Ruth’seyesrovedtohimfrequentlytoseehowhewasgettingon,andshewassurprisedandgladdenedbytheeasewithwhichhegotacquaintedwithhercousins. Hecertainlydidnotgrowexcited,whilebeingseatedremovedfromhimtheworryofhisshoulders. Ruthknewthemforclevergirls,superficiallybrilliant,andshecouldscarcelyunderstandtheirpraiseofMartinlaterthatnightatgoingtobed. Buthe,ontheotherhand,awitinhisownclass,agayquizzerandlaughter-makeratdancesandSundaypicnics,hadfoundthemakingoffunandthebreakingofgood-naturedlancessimpleenoughinthisenvironment. Andonthiseveningsuccessstoodathisback,pattinghimontheshoulderandtellinghimthathewasmakinggood,sothathecouldaffordtolaughandmakelaughterandremainunabashed.
