Hisownworkthathesentinwasreturned,alongwithastereotypedslipinforminghimthatthestaffsuppliedallthecopythatwasneeded.
Inoneofthegreatjuvenileperiodicalshenotedwholecolumnsofincidentandanecdote. Herewasachance. Hisparagraphswerereturned,andthoughhetriedrepeatedlyheneversucceededinplacingone. Lateron,whenitnolongermattered,helearnedthattheassociateeditorsandsub-editorsaugmentedtheirsalariesbysupplyingthoseparagraphsthemselves.
