Hewasremarkablysusceptibletomusic. Itwaslikestrongdrink,firinghimtoaudacitiesoffeeling,—adrugthatlaidholdofhisimaginationandwentcloud-soaringthroughthesky. Itbanishedsordidfact,floodedhismindwithbeauty,loosedromanceandtoitsheelsaddedwings. Hedidnotunderstandthemusicsheplayed. Itwasdifferentfromthedance-hallpiano-bangingandblatantbrassbandshehadheard. Buthehadcaughthintsofsuchmusicfromthebooks,andheacceptedherplayinglargelyonfaith,patientlywaiting,atfirst,fortheliftingmeasuresofpronouncedandsimplerhythm,puzzledbecausethosemeasureswerenotlongcontinued. Justashecaughttheswingofthemandstarted,hisimaginationattunedinflight,alwaystheyvanishedawayinachaoticscrambleofsoundsthatwasmeaninglesstohim,andthatdroppedhisimagination,aninertweight,backtoearth.
Once,itenteredhismindthattherewasadeliberaterebuffinallthis. Hecaughtherspiritofantagonismandstrovetodivinethemessagethatherhandspronounceduponthekeys. Thenhedismissedthethoughtasunworthyandimpossible,andyieldedhimselfmorefreelytothemusic. Theolddelightfulconditionbegantobeinduced. Hisfeetwerenolongerclay,andhisfleshbecamespirit; beforehiseyesandbehindhiseyesshoneagreatglory; andthenthescenebeforehimvanishedandhewasaway,rockingovertheworldthatwastohimaverydearworld.
