Thevistashesawwerevistasofgreenfoliageandforestglades,allsoftlyluminousorshotthroughwithflashinglights. Inthedistance,detailwasveiledandblurredbyapurplehaze,butbehindthispurplehaze,heknew,wastheglamouroftheunknown,thelureofromance. Itwaslikewinetohim. Herewasadventure,somethingtodowithheadandhand,aworldtoconquer—andstraightwayfromthebackofhisconsciousnessrushedthethought,conquering,towintoher,thatlily-palespiritsittingbesidehim.
TheglimmeringvisionwasrentasunderanddissipatedbyArthur,who,allevening,hadbeentryingtodrawhiswildmanout. MartinEdenrememberedhisdecision. Forthefirsttimehebecamehimself,consciouslyanddeliberatelyatfirst,butsoonlostinthejoyofcreatinginmakinglifeasheknewitappearbeforehislisteners’eyes. HehadbeenamemberofthecrewofthesmugglingschoonerHalcyonwhenshewascapturedbyarevenuecutter. Hesawwithwideeyes,andhecouldtellwhathesaw. Hebroughtthepulsingseabeforethem,andthemenandtheshipsuponthesea. Hecommunicatedhispowerofvision,tilltheysawwithhiseyeswhathehadseen. Heselectedfromthevastmassofdetailwithanartist’stouch,drawingpicturesoflifethatglowedandburnedwithlightandcolor,injectingmovementsothathislistenerssurgedalongwithhimonthefloodofrougheloquence,enthusiasm,andpower. Attimesheshockedthemwiththevividnessofthenarrativeandhistermsofspeech,butbeautyalwaysfollowedfastupontheheelsofviolence,andtragedywasrelievedbyhumor,byinterpretationsofthestrangetwistsandquirksofsailors’minds.
