Martinthoughtofhisfivehours’sleepanight,andsmiled. Theroomwassituatedoverthelaundryandwasinthesamebuildingwiththeenginethatpumpedwater,madeelectricity,andranthelaundrymachinery. Theengineer,whooccupiedtheadjoiningroom,droppedintomeetthenewhandandhelpedMartinrigupanelectricbulb,onanextensionwire,sothatittravelledalongastretchedcordfromoverthetabletothebed.
Thenextmorning,atquarter-pastsix,Martinwasroutedoutforaquarter-to-sevenbreakfast. Therehappenedtobeabath-tubfortheservantsinthelaundrybuilding,andheelectrifiedJoebytakingacoldbath.
"Gee,butyou’reahummer!"Joeannounced,astheysatdowntobreakfastinacornerofthehotelkitchen.
Withthemwastheengineer,thegardener,andtheassistantgardener,andtwoorthreemenfromthestable. Theyatehurriedlyandgloomily,withbutlittleconversation,andasMartinateandlistenedherealizedhowfarhehadtravelledfromtheirstatus. Theirsmallmentalcaliberwasdepressingtohim,andhewasanxioustogetawayfromthem. Soheboltedhisbreakfast,asickly,sloppyaffair,asrapidlyasthey,andheavedasighofreliefwhenhepassedoutthroughthekitchendoor.
Itwasaperfectlyappointed,smallsteamlaundry,whereinthemostmodernmachinerydideverythingthatwaspossibleformachinerytodo.
