           Mr.MorsebitterlyarraignedtheEnglishphilosopher’sagnosticism,butconfessedthathehadnotread"FirstPrinciples"; whileMr.ButlerstatedthathehadnopatiencewithSpencer,hadneverreadalineofhim,andhadmanagedtogetalongquitewellwithouthim. DoubtsaroseinMartin’smind,andhadhebeenlessstronglyindividualhewouldhaveacceptedthegeneralopinionandgivenHerbertSpencerup. Asitwas,hefoundSpencer’sexplanationofthingsconvincing; and,ashephrasedittohimself,togiveupSpencerwouldbeequivalenttoanavigatorthrowingthecompassandchronometeroverboard. SoMartinwentonintoathoroughstudyofevolution,masteringmoreandmorethesubjecthimself,andbeingconvincedbythecorroborativetestimonyofathousandindependentwriters. Themorehestudied,themorevistashecaughtoffieldsofknowledgeyetunexplored,andtheregretthatdayswereonlytwenty-fourhourslongbecameachroniccomplaintwithhim. 

           Oneday,becausethedaysweresoshort,hedecidedtogiveupalgebraandgeometry. Trigonometryhehadnotevenattempted. Thenhecutchemistryfromhisstudy-list,retainingonlyphysics. 

           "Iamnotaspecialist,"hesaid,indefence,toRuth. "NoramIgoingtotrytobeaspecialist. Therearetoomanyspecialfieldsforanyoneman,inawholelifetime,tomasteratitheofthem. Imustpursuegeneralknowledge. WhenIneedtheworkofspecialists,Ishallrefertotheirbooks."
