           Thethoughtcametohimthathewasnotagoodjudgeofhisownwork. HetrieditoutonGertrude. Hereadhisstoriesaloudtoher. Hereyesglistened,andshelookedathimproudlyasshesaid:- 

           "Ain’titgrand,youwritin’thosesortofthings." 

           "Yes,yes,"hedemandedimpatiently. "Butthestoryhowdidyoulikeit?" 

           "Justgrand,"wasthereply. "Justgrand,an’thrilling,too. Iwasallworkedup." 

           Hecouldseethathermindwasnotclear. Theperplexitywasstronginhergood-naturedface. Sohewaited. 

           "But,say,Mart,"afteralongpause,"howdiditend? Didthatyoungmanwhospokesohighfalutin’gether?" 

           And,afterhehadexplainedtheend,whichhethoughthehadmadeartisticallyobvious,shewouldsay:- 

           "That’swhatIwantedtoknow. Whydidn’tyouwritethatwayinthestory?"
