           "Comealong,Athos,comealong!"criedd’Artagnan;"nowwehavefoundeverythingexceptmoney,itwouldbestupidtobekilled."

           ButAthoscontinuedtomarchmajestically,whateverremarkshiscompanionsmade;andthey,findingtheirremarksuseless,regulatedtheirpacebyhis.

           Grimaudandhisbasketwerefarinadvance,outoftherangeoftheballs.

           Attheendofaninstanttheyheardafuriousfusillade.

           "What’sthat?"askedPorthos,"whataretheyfiringatnow?Ihearnoballswhistle,andIseenobody!"

           "Theyarefiringatthecorpses,"repliedAthos.

           "Butthedeadcannotreturntheirfire."

           "Certainlynot!Theywillthenfancyitisanambuscade,theywilldeliberate;andbythetimetheyhavefoundoutthepleasantry,weshallbeoutoftherangeoftheirballs.Thatrendersituselesstogetapleurisybytoomuchhaste."

           "Oh,Icomprehendnow,"saidtheastonishedPorthos.

           "That’slucky,"saidAthos,shrugginghisshoulders.

           Ontheirpart,theFrench,onseeingthefourfriendsreturnatsuchastep,utteredcriesofenthusiasm.

           Atlengthafreshdischargewasheard,andthistimetheballscamerattlingamongthestonesaroundthefourfriends,andwhistlingsharplyintheirears.TheRochellaishadatlasttakenpossessionofthebastion.
