           Butwhatwasclearestinallthiswasthatthetruehatred,theprofoundhatred,theinveteratehatredofMilady,wasincreasedbyhisnothavingkilledherbrother-in-law.

           D’ArtagnancamethenextdaytoMilady’s,andfindingherinaveryill-humor,hadnodoubtthatitwaslackofananswerfromM.deWardesthatprovokedherthus.Kittycamein,butMiladywasverycrosswithher.Thepoorgirlventuredaglanceatd’Artagnanwhichsaid,"SeehowIsufferonyouraccount!"

           Towardtheendoftheevening,however,thebeautifullionessbecamemilder;shesmilinglylistenedtothesoftspeechesofd’Artagnan,andevengavehimherhandtokiss.

           D’Artagnandeparted,scarcelyknowingwhattothink,butashewasayouthwhodidnoteasilylosehishead,whilecontinuingtopayhiscourttoMilady,hehadframedalittleplaninhismind.

           HefoundKittyatthegate,and,asontheprecedingevening,wentuptoherchamber.Kittyhadbeenaccusedofnegligenceandseverelyscolded.MiladycouldnotatallcomprehendthesilenceoftheComtedeWardes,andsheorderedKittytocomeatnineo’clockinthemorningtotakeathirdletter.

           D’ArtagnanmadeKittypromisetobringhimthatletteronthefollowingmorning.
