           "Oh,goodLord!"saidKitty,inalowvoice,"whatisthematterwithyou?Howpaleyouare!"

           "Theabominablecreature,"murmuredd’Artagnan.

           "Silence,silence,begone!"saidKitty."ThereisnothingbutawainscotbetweenmychamberandMilady’s;everywordthatisutteredinonecanbeheardintheother."

           "What!"saidKitty,blushing.

           "Or,atleast,Iwillgolater."

           HedrewKittytohim.Shehadthelessmotivetoresist,resistancewouldmakesomuchnoise.ThereforeKittysurrendered.

           ItwasamovementofvengeanceuponMilady.D’Artagnanbelieveditrighttosaythatvengeanceisthepleasureofthegods.Withalittlemoreheart,hemighthavebeencontentedwiththisnewconquest;buttheprincipalfeaturesofhischaracterwereambitionandpride.Itmust,however,beconfessedinhisjustificationthatthefirstusehemadeofhisinfluenceoverKittywastotryandfindoutwhathadbecomeofMme.Bonacieux;butthepoorgirlsworeuponthecrucifixtod’Artagnanthatshewasentirelyignorantonthathead,hermistressneveradmittingherintohalfhersecretsonlyshebelievedshecouldsayshewasnotdead.
