           Thequeencastaglancearoundher,andsawthecardinalbehind,withadiabolicalsmileonhiscountenance.

           "Sire,"repliedthequeen,withafalteringvoice,"because,inthemidstofsuchacrowdasthis,Ifearedsomeaccidentmighthappentothem."

           "Andyouwerewrong,madame.IfImadeyouthatpresentitwasthatyoumightadornyourselftherewith.Itellyouthatyouwerewrong."

           Thevoiceofthekingwastremulouswithanger.Everybodylookedandlistenedwithastonishment,comprehendingnothingofwhatpassed.

           "Sire,"saidthequeen,"IcansendforthemtotheLouvre,wheretheyare,andthusyourMajesty’swisheswillbecompliedwith."

           "Doso,madame,doso,andthatatonce;forwithinanhourtheballetwillcommence."

           Thequeenbentintokenofsubmission,andfollowedtheladieswhoweretoconducthertoherroom.Onhispartthekingreturnedtohisapartment.

           Therewasamomentoftroubleandconfusionintheassembly.Everybodyhadremarkedthatsomethinghadpassedbetweenthekingandqueen;butbothofthemhadspokensolowthateverybody,outofrespect,withdrewseveralsteps,sothatnobodyhadheardanything.Theviolinsbegantosoundwithalltheirmight,butnobodylistenedtothem.

           Thekingcameoutfirstfromhisroom.Hewasinamosteleganthuntingcostume;andMonsieurandtheothernoblesweredressedlikehim.
