Halfanhouraftertheentranceoftheking,freshacclamationswereheard;theseannouncedthearrivalofthequeen.Thealdermendidastheyhaddonebefore,andprecededbytheirsergeants,advancedtoreceivetheirillustriousguest.Thequeenenteredthegreathall;anditwasremarkedthat,liketheking,shelookeddullandevenweary.
Atthemomentsheentered,thecurtainofasmallgallerywhichtothattimehadbeenclosed,wasdrawn,andthepalefaceofthecardinalappeared,hebeingdressedasaSpanishcavalier.Hiseyeswerefixeduponthoseofthequeen,andasmileofterriblejoypassedoverhislips;thequeendidnotwearherdiamondstuds.
Thequeenremainedforashorttimetoreceivethecomplimentsofthecitydignitariesandtoreplytothesalutationsoftheladies.Allatoncethekingappearedwiththecardinalatoneofthedoorsofthehall.Thecardinalwasspeakingtohiminalowvoice,andthekingwasverypale.
Thekingmadehiswaythroughthecrowdwithoutamask,andtheribbonsofhisdoubletscarcelytied.
