           Theneachofthesemenretreatedasfarastheditch,fromwhicheachtookaconcealedmusket;theresultwasthatourseventravelerswereoutnumberedinweapons.Aramisreceivedaballwhichpassedthroughhisshoulder,andMousquetonanotherballwhichlodgedinthefleshypartwhichprolongsthelowerportionoftheloins.ThereforeMousquetonalonefellfromhishorse,notbecausehewasseverelywounded,butnotbeingabletoseethewound,hejudgedittobemoreseriousthanitreallywas.

           "Itwasanambuscade!"shoutedd’Artagnan."Don’twasteacharge!Forward!"

           Aramis,woundedashewas,seizedthemaneofhishorse,whichcarriedhimonwiththeothers.Mousqueton’shorserejoinedthem,andgallopedbythesideofhiscompanions.

           "Thatwillserveusforarelay,"saidAthos.

           "Iwouldratherhavehadahat,"saidd’Artagnan."Minewascarriedawaybyaball.Bymyfaith,itisveryfortunatethattheletterwasnotinit."

           "They’llkillpoorPorthoswhenhecomesup,"saidAramis.

           "IfPorthoswereonhislegs,hewouldhaverejoinedusbythistime,"saidAthos."Myopinionisthatonthegroundthedrunkenmanwasnotintoxicated."
