           "Youhavecommittedapieceoffolly,"saidAthos,"butitcan’tbehelped;thereisnodrawingback.Killthefellow,andrejoinusassoonasyoucan."

           Allthreeremountedtheirhorses,andsetoutatagoodpace,whilePorthoswaspromisinghisadversarytoperforatehimwithallthethrustsknowninthefencingschools.

           "Theregoesone!"criedAthos,attheendoffivehundredpaces.

           "ButwhydidthatmanattackPorthosratherthananyotheroneofus?"askedAramis.

           "Because,asPorthoswastalkinglouderthantherestofus,hetookhimforthechief,"saidd’Artagnan.

           "IalwayssaidthatthiscadetfromGasconywasawellofwisdom,"murmuredAthos;andthetravelerscontinuedtheirroute.

           AtBeauvaistheystoppedtwohours,aswelltobreathetheirhorsesalittleastowaitforPorthos.Attheendoftwohours,asPorthosdidnotcome,notanynewsofhim,theyresumedtheirjourney.

           AtaleaguefromBeauvais,wheretheroadwasconfinedbetweentwohighbanks,theyfellinwitheightortenmenwho,takingadvantageoftheroadbeingunpavedinthisspot,appearedtobeemployedindiggingholesandfillinguptherutswithmud.
