Onleavingtheconventheenteredintothemagistracy,becamepresidentontheplaceofhisuncle,embracedthecardinal’sparty,whichdidnotprovewantofsagacity,becamechancellor,servedhisEminencewithzealinhishatredagainstthequeen-motherandhisvengeanceagainstAnneofAustria,stimulatedthejudgesintheaffairofCalais,encouragedtheattemptsofM.deLaffemas,chiefgamekeeperofFrance;then,atlength,investedwiththeentireconfidenceofthecardinal—aconfidencewhichhehadsowellearned—hereceivedthesingularcommissionfortheexecutionofwhichhepresentedhimselfinthequeen’sapartments.
Thequeenwasstillstandingwhenheentered;butscarcelyhadsheperceivedhimthenshereseatedherselfinherarmchair,andmadeasigntoherwomentoresumetheircushionsandstools,andwithanairofsupremehauteur,said,"Whatdoyoudesire,monsieur,andwithwhatobjectdoyoupresentyourselfhere?"
