Thisadviceappearedgoodtothefuturechancellor.Heconjuredtheevilspiritwithabundanceofprayersofferedupbythemonks.Butthedevildoesnotsufferhimselftobeeasilydispossessedfromaplaceinwhichhehasfixedhisgarrison.Inproportionastheyredoubledtheexorcismsheredoubledthetemptations;sothatdayandnightthebellwasringingfullswing,announcingtheextremedesireformortificationwhichthepenitentexperienced.
Themonkshadnolongeraninstantofrepose.Bydaytheydidnothingbutascendanddescendthestepswhichledtothechapel;atnight,inadditiontocomplinesandmatins,theywerefurtherobligedtoleaptwentytimesoutoftheirbedsandprostratethemselvesontheflooroftheircells.
