           Rhettmadenoreplybutbroughtthetreelimbdownonthehorse’sbackwithacruelforcethatmadetheanimalleapforward.Withallthespeedthehorsecouldsummon,theyjoltedandbouncedacrossMariettaStreet.Aheadofthemwasatunneloffirewherebuildingswereblazingoneithersideoftheshort,narrowstreetthatleddowntotherailroadtracks.Theyplungedintoit.Aglarebrighterthanadozensunsdazzledtheireyes,scorchingheatsearedtheirskinsandtheroaring,crackingandcrashingbeatupontheirearsinpainfulwaves.Foraneternity,itseemed,theywereinthemidstofflamingtormentandthenabruptlytheywereinsemidarknessagain.

           Astheydasheddownthestreetandbumpedovertherailroadtracks,Rhettappliedthewhipautomatically.Hisfacelookedsetandabsent,asthoughhehadforgottenwherehewas.Hisbroadshoulderswerehunchedforwardandhischinjuttedoutasthoughthethoughtsinhismindwerenotpleasant.Theheatofthefiremadesweatstreamdownhisforeheadandcheeksbuthedidnotwipeitoff.
