           AshesatathisdesklatethatafternooninhisofficelookingoutintoThirdStreet,whereahurryingofbrokers,messengers,andanxiousdepositorsstillmaintained,hehadthefeelingthatsofarasPhiladelphiaandthelifeherewasconcerned,hisdayanditsdaywithhimwasover.Hedidnotcareanythingaboutthebrokeragebusinesshereanymoreoranywhere.Failuressuchasthis,anddisasterssuchastheChicagofire,thathadovertakenhimtwoyearsbefore,hadcuredhimofallloveofthestockexchangeandallfeelingforPhiladelphia.Hehadbeenveryunhappyhereinspiteofallhisprevioushappiness;andhisexperienceasaconvicthadmade,him,hecouldseequiteplainly,unacceptabletotheelementwithwhomhehadoncehopedtoassociate.Therewasnothingelsetodo,nowthathehadreestablishedhimselfasaPhiladelphiabusinessmanandbeenpardonedforanoffensewhichhehopedtomakepeoplebelievehehadnevercommitted,buttoleavePhiladelphiatoseekanewworld.
