Thereweresix,alltold,includingCowperwoodandStener.Twoofthemwereconfederatehousebreakerswhohadbeencaughtred-handedattheirmidnighttask.
Anotherprisonerwasnomoreandnolessthanaplainhorse-thief,ayoungmanoftwenty-six,whohadbeenconvictedbyajuryofstealingagrocer’shorseandsellingit.Thelastmanwasanegro,atall,shambling,illiterate,nebulous-mindedblack,whohadwalkedoffwithanapparentlydiscardedsectionofleadpipewhichhehadfoundinalumber-yard.Hisideawastosellortradeitforadrink.Hereallydidnotbelonginthiscourtatall;but,havingbeencaughtbyanundersizedAmericanwatchmanchargedwiththecareoftheproperty,andhavingatfirstrefusedtopleadguilty,notquiteunderstandingwhatwastobedonewithhim,hehadbeenperforceboundovertothiscourtfortrial.Afterwardhehadchangedhismindandadmittedhisguilt,sohenowhadtocomebeforeJudgePaydersonforsentenceordismissal.Thelowercourtbeforewhichhehadoriginallybeenbroughthadlostjurisdictionbybindinghimovertotohighercourtfortrial.EddieZanders,inhisself-appointedpositionasguideandmentortoCowperwood,hadconfidednearlyallofthisdatatohimashestoodwaiting.
Thecourtroomwascrowded.ItwasveryhumiliatingtoCowperwoodtohavetofileinthiswayalongthesideaislewiththeseothers,followedbyStener,welldressedbutsicklylookinganddisconsolate.
