           Whilehewasnotablycomfortedbythedissentingopinionsofthejudgesinminority,andwhilehehadbeenschoolinghimselftoexpecttheworstinthisconnectionandhadbeenarranginghisaffairsaswellashecouldinanticipationofit,Cowperwoodwasstillbitterlydisappointed.Itwouldbeuntruetosaythat,strongandself-reliantashenormallywas,hedidnotsuffer.Hewasnotwithoutsensibilitiesofthehighestorder,onlytheyweregovernedandcontrolledinhimbythatcoldironthing,hisreason,whichneverforsookhim.TherewasnofurtherappealpossiblesavetotheUnitedStatesSupremeCourt,asStegerpointedout,andthereonlyontheconstitutionalityofsomephaseofthedecisionandhisrightsasacitizen,ofwhichtheSupremeCourtoftheUnitedStatesmusttakecognizance.Thiswasatediousandexpensivethingtodo.Itwasnotexactlyobviousatthemomentonwhatpointhecouldmakeanappeal.Itwouldinvolvealongdelayperhapsayearandahalf,perhapslonger,attheendofwhichperiodhemighthavetoservehisprisontermanyhow,andpendingwhichhewouldcertainlyhavetoundergoincarcerationforatime.

           CowperwoodmusedspeculativelyforafewmomentsafterhearingSteger’spresentationofthecase.Thenhesaid:"Well,itlooksasifIhavetogotojailorleavethecountry,andI’vedecidedonjail.IcanfightthisoutrighthereinPhiladelphiainthelongrunandwin.
