           OneofthethingsmilitatingagainsthimwasthecontinuedoppositionofButlerandthepoliticians.Somehownoonecouldhavesaidexactlywhythegeneralpoliticalfeelingwasthatthefinancierandtheformercitytreasurerwouldlosetheirappealsandeventuallybesentencedtogether.Stener,inspiteofhisoriginalintentiontopleadguiltyandtakehispunishmentwithoutcomment,hadbeenpersuadedbysomeofhispoliticalfriendsthatitwouldbebetterforhisfuture’ssaketopleadnotguiltyandclaimthathisoffensehadbeenduetocustom,ratherthantoadmithisguiltoutrightandsoseemnottohavehadanyjustificationwhatsoever.Thishedid,buthewasconvictednevertheless.Forthesakeofappearances,atrumped-upappealwasmadewhichwasnowbeforetheStateSupremeCourt.

           Then,too,duetoonewhisperandanother,andtheseoriginatingwiththegirlwhohadwrittenButlerandCowperwood’swife,therewasatthistimeagrowingvolumeofgossiprelatingtotheallegedrelationsofCowperwoodwithButler’sdaughter,Aileen.TherehadbeenahouseinTenthStreet.IthadbeenmaintainedbyCowperwoodforher.NowonderButlerwassovindictive.This,indeed,explainedmuch.Andeveninthepractical,financialworld,criticismwasnowratheragainstCowperwoodthanhisenemies.For,wasitnotafact,thatattheinceptionofhiscareer,hehadbeenbefriendedbyButler?Andwhatawaytorewardthatfriendship!Hisoldestandfirmestadmirerswaggedtheirheads.
