           Becauseofhisactionintryingtoprotecthislargestcreditorsatthetimeofhisfailure,hefanciedthatoncehewasfreeagain,ifeverhegotfree,hiscredit,otherthingsbeingequal,wouldbegoodwiththosewhocouldhelphimmostsay,Cooke&Co.,Clark&Co.,Drexel&Co.,andtheGirardNationalBankprovidinghispersonalreputationhadnotbeentoobadlyinjuredbyhissentence.Fortunatelyforhisownhopefulnessofmind,hefailedfullytorealizewhatadepressingeffectalegaldecisionofthischaracter,soundorotherwise,hadonthemindsofevenhismostenthusiasticsupporters.

           Hisbestfriendsinthefinancialworldwerebynowconvincedthathiswasasinkingship.Astudentoffinanceonceobservedthatnothingissosensitiveasmoney,andthefinancialmindpartakeslargelyofthequalityofthethinginwhichitdeals.Therewasnousetryingtodomuchforamanwhomightbegoingtoprisonforatermofyears.Somethingmightbedoneforhimpossiblyinconnectionwiththegovernor,providinghelosthiscasebeforetheSupremeCourtandwasactuallysentencedtoprison;butthatwastwomonthsoff,ormore,andtheycouldnottellwhattheoutcomeofthatwouldbe.SoCowperwood’srepeatedappealsforassistance,extensionofcredit,ortheacceptanceofsomeplanhehadforhisgeneralrehabilitation,weremetwiththekindlyevasionsofthosewhoweredoubtful.Theywouldthinkitover.Theywouldseeaboutit.Certainthingswerestandingintheway.
