Itconsistedofacentralportion—prison,residenceforthesherifforwhatyouwill—threestorieshigh,withabattlementedcorniceandaroundbattlementedtoweraboutone-thirdashighasthecentralportionitself,andtwowings,eachtwostorieshigh,withbattlementedturretsateitherend,givingitahighlycastellatedandconsequently,fromtheAmericanpointofview,averyprison-likeappearance.Thefacadeoftheprison,whichwasnotmorethanthirty-fivefeethighforthecentralportion,normorethantwenty-fivefeetforthewings,wassetbackatleastahundredfeetfromthestreet,andwascontinuedateitherend,fromthewingstotheendofthestreetblock,byastonewallalloftwentyfeethigh.Thestructurewasnotseverelyprison-like,forthecentralportionwaspiercedbyratherlarge,unbarredapertureshungonthetwoupperstorieswithcurtains,andgivingthewholefrontaratherpleasantandresidentialair.Thewingtotheright,asonestoodlookinginfromthestreet,wasthesectionknownasthecountyjailproper,andwasdevotedtothecareofprisonersservingshort-termsentencesonsomejudicialorder.Thewingtotheleftwasdevotedexclusivelytothecareandcontrolofuntriedprisoners.Thewholebuildingwasbuiltofasmooth,light-coloredstone,whichonasnowynightlikethis,withthefewlampsthatwereusedinitglowingfeeblyinthedark,presentedaneery,fantastic,almostsupernaturalappearance.
